World Athletics Championships - Budapest
A week if athletics started today.

UK Medal prospects...

We have the fastest man on the planet Zharnel Hughes who this season broke the longstanding UK 100m & 200m records. Looks nailed on for a medal, should be gold.

Keely Hodgkinson is fastest at 800m this year and UK record holder, and will be looking to improve on her silver medals in the Olympics and last World Championships.

Dina Asher Smith is allegedly injury free and back to form so a possible medalist.

Laura Muir though not had the best season is a championship performer.

Katrina Johnson-Thompson is coming back to form.

We're always good for relay medals.

Usually a surprise or two such as
Jake Wightman's gold (currently injured) in the1500 at the last World Championships.

Hughes runs 9.99 without effort in his first 100m heat.

Looking forward to this. Ireland with a chance of a medal in the sprints. Bonus of some of the fittest birds on the planet.

Not Joe Royals scene, more a fat bird in the back of a lorry type of guy

Athletics is always a decent watch, it’s just a shame that it doesn’t really get much media coverage since Bolt and Farah retired.

I’ll try to watch as much as I can, especially the big finals.

Watched this evening's finals. Dutch women need a lesson on staying on their feet. Two falls in two different races meters from the finishing line. Cost them two medals at the very least. Hard to say if both would of got gold but would of been close. Made for some exciting viewing though.

Femke Bol is the Dutch teams most experienced and successful runner. Seems like extraordinary she should fall so near the line.

Leike Klaver on the other hand, can do no wrong. Amazonian beauty that she is

Not watched any of this alchemy malarkey but are you implying the Dutch bird has pulled a Lucas?
(Allegedly)

Re: World SPLATT!!! Championships. Essex
That was bizarre!
Last 2 races of the evening, both Dutch women who were leading with only a few metres to the line stumble over.

Nice silver for GB in the mixed 400m relay, would have been bronze but for the Dutch fall.

It’s the clogs they wear, bound to cause trouble on a modern synthetic surface.

Hmm. I wonder if there have been any unusual betting patterns

What an odd post

I feel a bit sorry for Katarina Johnson-Thompson - wins gold in a fantastic performance but barely gets a mention on the news due to the excessive coverage of the 'Lionesses' final defeat.

yeah agreed - amazing comeback considering her injuries and to throw a PB in the javelin under pressure was huge. Will be tougher at the LOLympics assuming Thiam is back and the american kid a year older & better, but she's always been one of the more likeable scousers & deserves more publicity & credit

Agree too. KJT is now double world champion.
It was just good to see her happy rather than on the edge of tears.
She also knocked three seconds off her 800m PB to clinch it.

Re: World Athletics Championships - Budapest
KJT performs better when there is not the burden of gold medal expectations on her. She has managed to keep up her standard in her banker disciplines but more importantly greatly improve her two below standard throwing ones.

Good luck to her and let’s hope she can give Thiem a run for her money at next year’s Olympics.

Exactly, hope she can stay fit and have a goo go next year. It would be nice to have a Covid free games too - the last one wasn't the same.

Asher-Smith has had some work done.

Re: World Athletics Championships - Budapest
Is DAS the most overhyped British athlete in history? Every championship for the last 6-7 years we hear she’s a champion in waiting blah blah but every time seemingly she underperforms and there’s a laundry list of reasons why, and why it’ll be better next time.

Female sprinting is ridiculously stacked at this point in time but she just can’t hang with the top girls. The BBC really need to stop putting so much expectation on her every go around.

Nice to see the BBC doing their bit for diversity, or lack of it. Which ever way you see it.
